Orlando International Airport History
The Orlando International Airport began in the 1970's when the McCoy Air Force Base was closed and the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority was created. By 1978 the Orlando Airport was in full swing, but it would be another six years until the international concourse was built. 1984 saw the launch of the Orlando Tradeport which would eventually help to establish the Orlando International Airport as a major trade center for all of Florida and the southern US. As Walt Disney World and other local attractions began to draw major international attention, airlines began to line up for slots at the airport and business began to boom throughout the 1980's. European traffic increased dramatically creating a need for more terminals and more gates in the late 80's, so an expansion was organized and completed in the early 90's. By 1992 the airport had surpassed the 20 million passenger mark, yet the demand for more flights remained high; the Orlando International Airport was forced to instigate a continuing expansion program to keep pace with an imaginative development plan and increased passenger flow. The Orlando International Airport had also expanded its commercial aviation sector during the 1980's and 90's becoming the US's largest exporter of flowers, plant and nursery stock, handling approximately 80% of the country's blooms. The Orlando International Airport sure has come along way since its early Air Force days... in fact; you could even say it's become the real McCoy!
