Orlando Car Rental Travel Guide - Hollywood Boulevard
Colorful shops and restaurants from yesteryear clash with neon and chrome in a fantasy montage of the past and present on Hollywood Boulevard. As Orlando vacationers stroll down the street, they will surely encounter one or more of Disney’s “Streetmosphere” characters - an assortment of street performers that are meant to depict the Hollywood 1930’s era. This collection of starlets, wannabe’s, reporters, directors, gossip columnists and even a detective interact with park guests in humorously surprising ways.
The Great Movie Ride:
The centerpiece of Disney’s Hollywood Studios is the building that houses The Great Movie Ride. The Disney “Imagineers” went all out in creating an exact full size replica of Graumann’s Chinese Theater - a building that offers excellent photo opportunities of your Orlando vacation both inside and outside! The actual blueprints were used for the construction of the building and even the lobby is an incredibly detailed duplicate of the original. Outside of this impressive structure, Orlando car rental customers will find hand, foot and yes, even paw prints of famous Disney stars and characters in the cement.
Once inside the building, Orlando car rental customers will see actual movie props as they make their way through the queue to the ride. Some of those that can be seen are the carousel horse from Mary Poppins and Dorothy’s ruby slippers from The Wizard of Oz. Pay attention to the film clips that are being shown while weaving your way through the labyrinth - they are a preview of the re-creations that you’ll see on the ride, itself.
The twenty-two minute ride utilizes special effects, film footage and incredibly detailed Audio-animatronics, as it takes Orlando vacation goers on a wonderfully nostalgic trip through movie history. Young and old alike will appreciate the depiction of scenes from classics like Casablanca, Mary Poppins and Singin’ in the Rain and from favorites like Raiders of the Lost Ark and Alien. The scene set in “Munchkinland” from The Wizard of Oz is truly exceptional! The culmination of this ride is a delightful montage of film clips from movies that all in your party are sure to recognize.
WARNING: Although this is a ride intended for the whole family, there are several scenes that could be frightening to children or the incredibly squeamish. These include the alien from Alien, the “Wicked Witch of the West” from The Wizard of Oz and Indiana Jones’ least favorite thing ... snakes (albeit Audio-animatronic ones) in Raiders of the Lost Ark. Also, your tram is hijacked during the ride but I’ll leave the details out for those that would like to maintain a little of the ride’s mystery.
Behind The Scenes:
Besides Disney, Orlando's other major employer is Lockheed Martin. Disney purchased an airplane from them and uses the front half of the airplane for one of the sets in The Great Movie Ride. The back half of the airplane can be observed during The Magic Kingdom's Jungle Cruise ride in Adventureland.
